OKCU Athletics Food Drive Totals More Than 22,000 Items

ΒιΆΉ΄«Γ½ City University athletes collected a record number of food items for Skyline Ministry in its annual food drive. Student-athletes collected more than 20,000 non-perishable food items to help feed the hungry, 2,112 more than last year’s total. The ΒιΆΉ΄«Γ½ City University athletics annual food drive has resulted in more than 89,000 pounds of food for Skyline in the past seven years.

β€œAs we endure the rigors of final exams and multiple other challenges, I’m reminded that I’ve never had to wonder where my next meal would be coming from,” said ΒιΆΉ΄«Γ½ City University athletic director Jim Abbott. β€œThanks to the generosity and efforts of our coaches and student-athletes, we have alleviated that burden for others in our community and provided them with hope and some level of comfort.”

Skyline Urban Ministry is a mission outreach of the ΒιΆΉ΄«Γ½ Conference of the United Methodist Church. Skyline has always focused on the poor and needy of ΒιΆΉ΄«Γ½ County. Skyline’s mission is to impact lives, to empower those in need and to address the roots of poverty in ΒιΆΉ΄«Γ½. Skyline’s Community Cupboard operates as a choice pantry where clients can select their own foods, based on their family size and food preferences. Every pound of food received at Skyline generates approximately five meals, according to Executive Director Rev. Deborah Ingraham.

β€œWhat you are doing when you donate is giving a senior citizen the opportunity to buy medicine instead of trying to decide between medicine and food. Every donation helps members of our community,” said Ingraham.
