The 18th annual Documentary Film ΒιΆΉ΄«Γ½ at ΒιΆΉ΄«Γ½ City University will open at 2 p.m. Sunday with Daniel Glickβs βA Place to Stand.β All films in the series will be screened free to the public in the Kerr McGee Auditorium in Meinders School of Business.
The series is made possible through a gift from the Thatcher Hoffman Smith Endowment Fund.
βA Place to Standβ tells the story of celebrated poet and Santa Fe, N.M., native Jimmy Santiago Baca. Baca was a petty thief and a drug dealer when he was sentenced to five years in one of the deadliest prisons in America, the Arizona State Prison.
He began his incarceration violent, angry and illiterate, yet taught himself how to read and write, discovering a passion for poetry that ultimately saved his life. The film is inspired by Bacaβs best-selling memoir of the same name published in 2001. The book was called βelegant and grippingβ (Los Angeles Times) and βan astonishing narrative that affirms the triumph of the human spiritβ (###em).
The Documentary Film ΒιΆΉ΄«Γ½ theme is titled βThing and Spirit Both.β It is based on a poem by Marie Howe, who will visit ΒιΆΉ΄«Γ½ April 6 for this yearβs Thatcher Hoffman Smith Poetry ΒιΆΉ΄«Γ½.
