March 6 Film Screening: 'Faces Places'

Join us for the continuation of our 37th annual film series on Wed., March 6, 7:30 PM

Faces Places –AgnΓ¨s Varda and J.R., France (2017) 89 min.

AgnΓ¨s Varda, one of the leading figures of the French New Wave movement that revolutionized world cinema in the β€˜50s and β€˜60s, travels through the French countryside with respected young photographer J.R. to convert small towns into a dynamic art project. Driving around in a giant camera-shaped van with a photo booth inside, the duo create massive murals of people they meet along the way, placing their monolithic images in places that are meaningful to the residents. Throughout their journey, Varda wrestles with her age, her legacy, and perhaps the greatest cataclysm that could befall a great image-maker: failing eyesight. The Oscar-nominated documentary is worthy of the term β€œcrowd-pleasing” with which it is frequently labeled, as it encourages us to see art in the everyday. In French with English subtitles.

β€œAlternately funny, sad, and uplifting, Faces Places teaches us to see our everyday lives as worthy of veneration, and a great window to the soul of one of France’s greatest directors. [It] is a testament to her curious, generous, democratic spirit.” - A.O. Scott, The New York Times
