Faces Places βAgnΓ¨s Varda and J.R., France (2017) 89 min.
AgnΓ¨s Varda, one of the leading figures of the French New Wave movement that revolutionized world cinema in the β50s and β60s, travels through the French countryside with respected young photographer J.R. to convert small towns into a dynamic art project. Driving around in a giant camera-shaped van with a photo booth inside, the duo create massive murals of people they meet along the way, placing their monolithic images in places that are meaningful to the residents. Throughout their journey, Varda wrestles with her age, her legacy, and perhaps the greatest cataclysm that could befall a great image-maker: failing eyesight. The Oscar-nominated documentary is worthy of the term βcrowd-pleasingβ with which it is frequently labeled, as it encourages us to see art in the everyday. In French with English subtitles.
βAlternately funny, sad, and uplifting, Faces Places teaches us to see our everyday lives as worthy of veneration, and a great window to the soul of one of Franceβs greatest directors. [It] is a testament to her curious, generous, democratic spirit.β - A.O. Scott, The New York Times
